This handbook will show you how to build a survey using the Multiple Generator Random Interpreter (MGRI) method in Qualtrics and how to clean the data collected from the survey. This handbook does not provide a conceptual introduction to MGRI. To learn what MGRI is and how it could benefit your study, please refer to Marin & Hampton (2007). Our research brief also provides information about using MGRI in online surveys.

Requirements

Please make sure you have access to Qualtrics and have R and R Studio installed.

You only need a free account to import and access the sample Qualtrics survey in this toolkit. Please refer to this page to learn how to import a .qsf file into your Qualtrics account. R and R Studio are free software.

This handbook assumes that you have basic understanding of Qualtrics and R. To learn more about how to use Qualtrics functions, please refer to this page. To learn more about how to use R, please refer to this page or other available resources.

Download the Toolkit

The toolkit includes four files: (1) this handbook, (2) sample survey (.qsf file), (3) sample dataset (.csv file), and (4) R script (.R file).

Tips for Readers

This handbook first shows key features of the sample survey and introduces how to build the sample survey. If you are new to Qualtrics, I recommend you import the sample survey into your Qualtrics account, and click each function mentioned in the introduction.

Subsequently, this handbook will provide an explanation of how to download the data, and how to clean the data with an R script. If you are new to R, please make sure you learn the basics first. This handbook provides a brief explanation of the R script and does not introduce the basic functions and concepts required to understand the whole script.
